There are more than 166,000 young carers in England, caring for siblings, parents and others. Some commentators say that the official statistics are only the tip of the iceberg as the young people are often hidden from view. The Watford African Caribbean Association has a history of supporting Young Carers and most recently took a group to a special breakfast at Jurys Inn Hotel (Watford) followed by a trip to the movies to see Free Birds 3D.
Asked about the day, one carer aged 9 said the breakfast at Jurys Inn was “so tasty and posh” and another thought the film “was really good and entertaining for me and my brother and made us laugh”.
Watford African Caribbean Association Carers Support Group Co-ordinator, Olabisi Onanuga, said “it is important to identify and support young carers as early as possible. Working together, we can have a meaningful, positive and lasting impact on the well-being of young people”.
