Elders Project

LunchFormed in September 1995, The African Caribbean Elders Project (“TACEP”) takes a holistic approach to the well-being of the over 50s. Collaborating with organisations such as Age UK, TACEP aims to improve the health and lifestyles of the community through engagement, information, diet and exercise.

The objectives of the project include:

  • To provide a meeting place for the elderly of all backgrounds
  • To identify common issues concerning the community
  • To maintain cultural activities and debate
  • To provide mental and physical stimulation
  • To provide a link with younger people within the community
  • To provide health related support

TACEP delivers these objectives through their volunteer and user-led initiative – the United Friends Club. The Club provides nutritional international dishes for the elderly once a week together with cascading information about healthier lifestyles to attendees. The Club also prepares meals for the house-bound with delivery being performed by volunteers and carers. At Christmas, the club works with local faith groups delivering food to the elderly.
Regular physical activity is not only great for the body but it is also good for the mind, mood and memory. Every Tuesday, the United Friends Club runs a programme of low impact, high energy fitness sessions – including chair-based exercise, Tai Chi and Yoga. Each session aims to make the older generation more active and more confident. The exercises are fun and can be performed at home.
Other activities include music, board games, dominoes, health seminars, competitions and outings. Users also participate in the “Brain Gym” and “Reminiscing” initiatives which offer mental stimulation.
