Walking is gentle, simple, low-impact, free and one of the easiest ways to get more active, lose weight and become healthier.
It is underrated as a form of exercise but walking is suitable for people of all ages and most abilities. Regular walking has been shown to reduce the risk of chronic illnesses, such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, asthma, stroke, dementia and some cancers.
The route begins at Whippendell Woods Car Park on Grove Mill Lane and lasts for about an hour at a moderate pace. The 160 acre woodland offers fine views, a mix of trails and supports an abundance of bird life and 270 species of plants. It is also a popular filming location – scenes from Star Wars, Silent Witness and Holby City were recorded here. Waterproof shoes are recommended.
